In Attack on Titan Season 3, Episode 3, titled "Old Story," the focus shifts to flashbacks that reveal the dark pasts of Historia Reiss and Commander Erwin Smith. The episode also uncovers more about the true power of the Reiss royal family and the intentions of Kenny Ackerman. 

Plot summary

Historia's tragic past
In a flashback, Historia recounts her lonely and painful childhood as a bastard child of Rod Reiss. 

• She was raised on a remote Reiss family farm, rarely seeing her mother, Alma, who completely ignored her.
• Her one attempt to get affection was met with a cold, disgusted push from her mother, who later stated she regretted not killing her.
• Five years ago, after the fall of Wall Maria, Rod Reiss came to the farm and introduced himself as Historia's father. However, Kenny Ackerman's squad soon arrived to kill both Historia and her mother.
• After Kenny murdered Alma in front of her, Historia's life was spared only when Rod intervened, on the condition that she change her name to "Krista Lenz" and live incognito. 

Erwin's painful past
The episode also reveals the source of Commander Erwin's dedication to uncovering the truth about the walls. 

• As a child, Erwin's teacher and father held forbidden theories about the true history of the walls.
• When a young Erwin shared his father's theories with his classmates, the Military Police learned of them. Erwin's father was then killed in an "accident".
• Realizing that the government would kill anyone who questioned their official history, Erwin dedicated his life to proving his father right and uncovering the real secrets of the world. 

The Reiss family's power and plan
Meanwhile, the Survey Corps works to piece together the greater conspiracy. 

• Hange and Levi interrogate Djel Sannes, a Military Police officer who tortured Pastor Nick.
• The team learns that the Reiss family is the true royal bloodline and possesses the Founding Titan's power, which allows them to wipe humanity's memories.
• Hange confirms that a Titan can gain a Shifter's powers by eating them, and the Reiss family plans for Historia to become a Titan, devour Eren, and take back the Founding Titan. 

Erwin's plan and Kenny's revenge
As the Survey Corps gathers intelligence, the government fights back. 

• Framed for the murder of Dimo Reeves, Commander Erwin faces arrest but shares his plan for a coup with Commander Pyxis.
• Erwin reveals that their best strategy is to crown the legitimate heir, Historia, exposing the current government as a sham.
• The episode ends with the Survey Corps preparing to launch a raid on the Reiss family chapel, where Eren and Historia are being held.
