Reception & Controversy

The film has received mixed to negative reviews, with critics pointing to an incoherent plot, predictable turns, and what they describe as villainization of one religion. The use of Hindu pilgrimage songs amidst the murder case narrative was also criticized for feeling like "tourism ads" rather than integrated storytelling. 

The film sparked controversy due to its sensitive subject matter and allegations of promoting communal hatred and vilifying a particular community. Several petitions were filed, including one by one of the accused, Mohammad Javed, seeking to halt its release, arguing it could impact the ongoing trial. The Delhi High Court allowed its release after the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting dismissed petitions challenging its certification, stating that exhibition wouldn't cause irreparable harm. The Supreme Court also refused to stay the release, transferring the matter back to the Delhi High Court for further consideration.

The film was released in India on August 8, 2025. It is also known as "Gyanvapi Files: A Tailor's Murder Story". The film's producer has claimed to have received death threats after the release.
