 season 3, episode 2, titled "The Starry Night," focuses almost entirely on the brutal and bloody "Hide and Seek" game, resulting in several significant character deaths. The episode further breaks protagonist Gi-hun, forcing him to confront the darkness of his own rage. 

No-eul kills the doctor after Gyeong-seok recovers. In the game's maze, Hyun-ju, Geum-ja, and Jun-hee team up. Myung-gi reluctantly partners with Nam-gyu and helps kill several hiding attackers, realizing that narrowing down other attackers' targets will also eliminate them, thus increasing the prize pool. Elsewhere, Seon-nyeo is betrayed by Player 100, Jeong-dae, and killed by Min-su, who hallucinates Se-mi under the influence of Thanos' drugs that Nam-gyu dropped. Jun-hee injures her ankle and goes into labor while Hyun-ju kills several attackers attacking them. Geum-ja helps Jun-hee deliver her baby, but Hyun-ju is later killed by Myung-gi just as she discovers a way out; overcome with guilt, at the sight of Jun-hee and the newborn, Myung-gi walks away. Meanwhile, a vengeful Gi-hun, a tagger, pursues Dae-ho, who confesses to having lied about his military past and betrayed the rebellion out of fear. Enraged, Gi-hun strangles him to death. Moments before the game ends, Yong-sik, having failed to eliminate those in hiding, nearly kills Jun-hee, forcing Geum-ja to intervene and stab him, resulting in his death by the guard and her devastation. Blaming himself for the deaths of the rebels, Gi-hun attempts suicide but is stopped by guards.

The game: Hide and Seek

• The maze: The game takes place in a large, eerie labyrinth of stairs, hallways, and doors, illuminated by a fake starry sky on the ceiling.
• The roles:
  • Red Team ("Seekers"): Armed with knives, their goal is to hunt and kill at least one Blue Team member within 30 minutes. If they fail, they are eliminated.
  • Blue Team ("Hiders"): Armed with keys in one of three shapes (circle, triangle, or square), they must find the exit. The exit requires one key of each shape, forcing players to cooperate—or kill to collect the set.
• The outcome: The game is a chaotic, nerve-wracking affair filled with betrayals and shifting alliances. Multiple characters are eliminated, with some of the most heartbreaking moments involving the betrayal of former allies. 

Major character developments and events

• Gi-hun's descent: Fuelled by rage and guilt from the failed rebellion, Gi-hun hunts down Dae-ho, whom he blames for Jung-bae's death. After a long chase, Gi-hun strangles Dae-ho to death with his bare hands. In his dying moments, Dae-ho reminds Gi-hun that he was the one who led the rebellion, making him responsible for all the resulting deaths. This confrontation pushes Gi-hun to his moral rock bottom.
• A mother's choice: Geum-ja and the pregnant Jun-hee team up with Hyun-ju. Hyun-ju, a former Special Forces soldier, is a strong protector for the group.
  • During the game, Jun-hee gives birth to her baby.
  • Hyun-ju finds and unlocks the exit but decides to go back for the others.
  • Tragically, Hyun-ju is stabbed and killed by crypto influencer Myung-gi, who is unaware that she was protecting his baby.
  • At the exit, Geum-ja and Jun-hee are confronted by Geum-ja's son, Yong-sik, now a "Seeker" who must kill to survive.
  • When Yong-sik moves to kill Jun-hee and the newborn, Geum-ja makes a horrific decision and stabs her own son with her hairpin to save the baby.
• The birth of hope: Amidst the despair, Jun-hee's baby is introduced as a new player, with creator Hwang Dong-hyuk calling the infant a "beacon of hope".
• Jun-ho's parallel investigation: Off the island, Jun-ho continues his search for the games with allies he has assembled. 

Significance

• The episode is widely considered one of the series' best, with many viewers praising its high tension and emotional weight, reminiscent of the marble game in season 1.
